Chapter Twenty-Four
Emelyn
I composed myself, wiping away the tears as I moved out of Aceâs hold.
âLetâs go,â I said. Turning away, I rushed outside with Ace on my heels.
âWait,â Crow shouted from behind us. âThereâs nowhere for you to go. The only place left for you is the rebellion.â
I didnât want to admit it, but he was right. No one would help us knowing who we wereâwhat I was. Ember would destroy every homeâevery cityâif they knew they harbored me. Crow continued reasoning with my back to him.
âWe can work together, help you learn about your bending, your powers. You need to control them if you ever want this war to be over.â His voice fell quiet. âIâm sorry about what happened back then, to your family, to both of your familiesâ¦but they would want this war to end too.â
I hated that everything he said made sense. I wanted to pummel him, leave and never return, but I couldnât. Not now, not when I was the Peacebringer and the only one able to restore this world, regardless that I didnât know how. And the rebellion might be the help I needed.
Ace looked at me, and I could see his hesitation too. It was as if he could hear my thoughts, the same ones circulating through his mind.
âPleaseâ¦â Crowâs voice was pleading, and it made my walls crumble. I loathed that the sound defused my anger.
A tense pause of contemplation stretched between all of us until I finally spoke up again.
âFineâ¦,â I said, letting out a long breath. I turned and looked at him for the first time. âLead the wayâ¦,â I spat with a wave of my hand, and I waited for him to lead us out of the cave and toward the rebellion.
Most of the journey was made in complete and utter silence.
